Co-op Tips for Anomaly Cafe
Role splits, short callouts, and calm recovery for 24-player shifts.
Co-op is the default difficulty modifier
Anomaly Cafe is built for online co-op with a 24-player ceiling. That cap is exciting—and chaotic. Without structure, you get duplicate tickets, ignored anomalies, and twelve people screaming “what?” at once. This guide is the social operating system for Emma’s Cafe.
Fundamentals still live in How to Play. Service detail is in Recipes and Serving. Detection detail is in Spot Anomalies.
Role kit that scales
Use roles even with friends who “hate roles.” Labels prevent pile-ups:
- Counter lead (1): Owns order intake and ticket assignment.
- Prep (1–2): Builds food/drink; does not wander for lore.
- Runners (2–4): Deliver, bus, keep lanes clear.
- Watch floaters (2+): Primary scanners on a zone rotation (Café Map).
- Flex (rest of lobby): Fill gaps; never all flex into prep.
In smaller lobbies, merge watch + runner. In full lobbies, protect the watch role fiercely—someone must look.
Callout contracts
Agree before the rush:
- Soft vs hard language (see spotting guide).
- One talker per incident unless split objectives.
- Repeat-back rule: the nearest player confirms “eyes on.”
- No meme spam during active threats.
Good call: “Wrong lamp color, booth left, 70%, need confirm.”
Bad call: “BRO BRO BRO LOOK.”
Comms stack
- Voice for immediate threats.
- Text for sticky notes (“poster still wrong”).
- Emotes/pings only if your group actually understands them—do not invent twelve silent signals mid-alpha.
Keep headphones on; audio tells are real. Controls notes in Controls.
Rush + anomaly double pressure
When both happen:
- Counter lead freezes new complex tickets.
- Watch + one flex investigate.
- Prep finishes only in-hand work.
- After resolve, runners clear backlog for 60–90 seconds before jokes resume.
Survival steps: Survive Anomalies. Severity context: Danger Tier.
Teaching newcomers mid-shift
Alpha games grow through friend invites. Onboard with:
- One sentence loop: serve, maintain, spot.
- Point them at Beginner Priority.
- Give them runner or secondary watch—not counter lead on minute one.
- Celebrate correct soft calls even if false; punish silence more than mistakes.
Toxicity and alpha stress
Bugs will fake anomalies (Known Bugs). Do not roast teammates for cautious calls. Do roast leaving trash in doorways. Keep the vibe closer to kitchen brigade than horror trash-talk stream.
Party size strategy
- Duo/trio: Everyone is flex; verbalize every scan.
- 6–12: Full role kit appears; practice clean handoffs.
- Near 24: Appoint a quiet “shift lead” who only manages focus, not ego.
Tools that keep groups honest
- Shift Checklist before peak.
- Spotting Checklist on a timer (every few minutes).
- Alpha Patch Notes in the Discord/group chat the day of an update.
Anti-patterns
- Everyone lore-hunting while tickets burn
- Secret splits “for content” without telling watch
- Installing unverified scripts to “help the team” (Scripts Hub)
- Arguing about Steam Anomaly Cafe mechanics that do not apply here

Example mid-shift timeline
Roles and landmarks at 0:00, first rush at 0:05, a false soft call at 0:12 (still good practice), a real audio tell at 0:20 with freeze and buddy peek, backlog cleanup at 0:22, teach a late joiner lanes via Café Map at 0:30. If two players argue about a prop, get a third pair of eyes and a thirty-second timer, then escalate or park it on Known Bugs.
Mute culture and signal loss
Muting everyone because the lobby is loud solves headphones pain and creates anomaly blindness. Prefer lowering individual volumes, appointing one incident talker, and asking meme chat to move to text during red status. If someone refuses and keeps screaming, reassign them off watch duty until they can follow the callout contract.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the most important role in a full server?
Protect a dedicated watch/scanner role. Full lobbies fail when everyone cooks and nobody looks.
How do we stop overlapping callouts?
Use one primary talker per incident and a repeat-back confirm from the nearest player.
Should we pause all service during anomalies?
Pause new complex tickets, finish only in-hand work, resolve the threat, then clear backlog together.
How do we onboard friends quickly?
Give the one-sentence loop, park them on runner or secondary watch, and point them to Beginner Priority after the shift.
